What Are the Fees for UK eBay?

Before diving into the recent fee changes for UK eBay, it’s helpful to know the existing standard fees for UK eBay. After all, selling on eBay isn’t free (unfortunately). When selling items on eBay, there are a few fees that sellers need to keep in mind.

First, there is the listing fee, which is charged when creating a new listing. After receiving the first 1,000 listings for free (or more, if you have an eBay shop), they’ll charge you 35p as a private seller for each new listing created.

Once you sell an item, they’ll charge you a final value fee. This is calculated as 12.8% of the sale's total amount (yes, it includes taxes and other fees). Additionally, most sellers are also charged 30p per order.

Remember that if an item is sold for more than £5,000, there is an additional fee of 3% for the portion of the sale price above £5,000.

Aside from that, remember that eBay UK may charge additional fees if you add updates to the listing or if you’re shipping to buyers in different countries. For a full breakdown of every eBay seller fee you can expect, view our comprehensive guide.

UK eBay Fees for 2023

Now, what’s changed in April 2023 regarding new UK eBay fees? As mentioned above, eBay announced they were adjusting several eBay seller fees in February.

All Shop package prices increased as of April 1st, 2023. However, eBay is doubling the free monthly allowance of seven-day auction-style listings for all Shop packages to compensate.

The eBay Shop fee changes are listed below:

  • Basic: Price increase from £25 to £27
  • Featured: Price increase from £69 to £77
  • Anchor: Price increase from £399 to £437

And here are the upgrades for the seven-day auction-style listing allowance:

  • Basic: Upgrade from 50 to 100
  • Featured: Upgrade from 300 to 600
  • Anchor: Upgrade from 500 to 1,000

Additionally, Featured and Anchor Shop subscribers will no longer receive upgrade credits for their listings but will still enjoy all other Shop allowances and benefits.

What’s stayed the same amid these changes? Your Shop subscription still comes with an eBay packaging voucher worth £10 (for Featured Shop subscribers) or £20 (for Anchor Shop subscribers) each month to spend on eBay-branded packaging supplies.

This is great news, and it certainly helps offset the increase in Shop package prices. However, if these changes affect your eCommerce business, it’s important to learn how to effectively manage eBay fees in the UK.

Managing eBay Fees in the UK

To have a successful selling business on eBay, you need to know all fees that come with setting up your shop and selling items. If only it were as simple as listing items and receiving cash in exchange for them! While that's certainly part of it, a lot more goes into successfully managing and scaling an eBay eCommerce business these days.

Understanding Your Listing Fees

To list items for sale on eBay, there are listing fees involved. We've mentioned these above. However, what's most important is that these fees vary depending on which format you choose for your listings, whether that be an auction or fixed-price listing, and also which category the item falls into.

Why is it important to be aware of these costs before listing an item? It'll help you decide how much profit you will make from each transaction. This helps you learn how to properly price your items.

Transaction Fees

When selling an item on eBay, it is important to remember that transaction fees are involved. These fees include insertion fees (the cost of listing an item) and final value fees (the cost of making a sale). Again, these fees vary depending on your item's category and the format your listing takes.

Other Costs

Managing UK eBay fees in 2023 isn't just about the cost of listing and transactions. There are other costs associated with running a business too!

For example, if you want to upgrade your account status so customers feel more secure when buying from you, this can incur additional charges. Additionally, advertising costs may be included, as well as returns policy costs if applicable. Factor these into your eBay accounting and you'll set yourself up for success.

UK eBay Fees: What to Consider

When managing UK eBay fees in 2023, it's important to consider all the factors included in online commerce, such as:

  • Legal requirements
  • Customer service needs
  • Competition levels within certain categories or markets

All these factors could impact your overall costs associated with selling on eBay.

Additionally, it pays to ensure you regularly check eBay's website or newsletter to receive updates about fee changes for UK eBay now and in the future. Aside from that, our biggest suggestion is to automate your eBay bookkeeping process.
